(Movie Review) The Expendables 2

It’s like watching Rambo, Die Hard, and The Transporter at the same time, with touches of Swarchenegger’s The Terminator and Jet Li’s classic martial arts. With a cast of megawatt action stars, bloody combat scenes, and just enough humour, The Expendables 2 is a must-see for any action-hero fan.

In this sequel of the successful 2010’s box-office The Expendables, Mr. Church (Bruce Willis) rounds up the Expendables team to embark on a mission to secure a secret package from a plane shot down in Albania. The team, led by Stallone consists of familiar faces from the previous movie (Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Terry Crews, and Jet Li) in addition to two fresh faces, Chinese actress Yu Nan and a military-trained sniper played quite well by Liam Hemsworth.

The mission is off to a great start, but suddenly takes turn for the worse when one of the team member gets killed by an adversary named Vilain (Jean-Claude Van Damme). What follows is an action-packed brawls and few dramatic moments, when the team appears to be losing and receives assistance from Booker (Chuck Norris), Trench (Swarchenegger), and Church.

Director Simon West makes the most out of the star-packed casts, putting as many of them into one scene as possible. There’s one with all the Expendables team and Chuck Norris, but that doesn’t beat the scene of Swarchenegger and Willis shooting bad guys side by side, while at the same time exchanging comic dialogues. These guys are unbelievable. They make winning over what seems like a gazillion armed enemies a piece of cake.

Action movie fans will love the exaggeration apparent in every scene. Chuck Norris taking a mini-army single-handedly or Jason Statham surviving the bloodbath without even an inch of a cut or an ounce of blood shed. The ending is predictable, but let’s be real for a second, who can win over a team involving the world’s biggest, most famous, highest grossing action stars? No one. Not even Van Damme.

The Expendables 2 is cinema-worthy, just don’t go into the theater expecting a deep storyline and Oscar-worthy acting from the casts. As a matter of fact, don’t go into the theater expecting nothing but nostalgic moments of seeing your favourite action movie heroes on screen again.
